A Javanese dalang (ventriloquist puppeteer) pits an evil ogre against the noble hero Ardjuna (my namesake?). The contest was one of many trials in an all-night performance geared to entertain refugees of an erupting volcano. Hours of antics, colored with modern-day comedy and tragedy thanks to local hecklers, climaxed by 4 am, when Ardjuna received the divine power that returned Earth to order. This show drew more viewers than the Soccer World Cup semi-finals, held the same night. Local folk would mightly approve of ‘Sita Sings the Blues’.
